How to support the special needs community this holiday season
As we shop for gifts for our friends, family, and loved ones during the holidays (and throughout the year), it is important to consider both what we are purchasing as well as the company we are purchasing the gifts from.
I have shared this harrowing statistic before, but 85% of individuals on the autism spectrum are underemployed or unemployed. In comparison, the national unemployment rate sits at 3.6%. It is time to shed any preconceived notions of what neurodivergent employees "can" or "cannot" do, as we all have different strengths; and, we should not judge a person based on what we see on the outside or limit our perceptions of others' abilities based on this. There is potential for all!
Fortunately, there are some companies that are making intentional efforts to address this problem and open the doors and create opportunities for neurodivergent employees. If you are looking for gift ideas, consider supporting one of these companies that are founded by and/or hire neurodivergent employees.
